I like fancy dress...

In the spirit of valentines day: gummy bears being naughty.

Valve merch is on sale now. It's usually pretty expensive so if you're thinking of buying, now is the time. Also the fabulous Mount and Blade (which our own Bobbicus talked about here) is only five bucks until Monday.

With the release of Call of Pripyat, I've been going through the original (I didn't play Clear Sky,as my understanding is you might as well just play the original again), and boy. I can say sometimes it's just an exercise in frustration and random annoying deaths with quicksave as your only friend. And other times it's brutally immersive and fantastically atmospheric. So I hear Call of Pripyat has much less dungeon/sewer crawling, which I thought was the weakest part of the original (mostly because to me, horror attempts in video games are just plain gimmicky), so that's good. But I also hear that the side missions are basically required in it, which I'm worried will make it feel too much like a grindy RPG. Where did I hear these things, from this pretty good review.

Check out this cool, visual RSS reader.

Meet the iPad™. It's a magical and revolutionary device. Magical....really? is it really magical?

It's certainly popular.

Everything is certainly abuzz. Even Pee-Wee's got one. MadTV predicted it.

But it's probably not magical. Yea, not magical. What I notice is that it's priced at $500 for the base model, with just 16GB of storage. The 64GB model brings it up to $700. You can buy 2 fairly powerful netbooks for that price. And at least they'll have USB, Flash, and a 160GB hard drive.

And no flash. Looks like Apple hurt Adobe's feelings. To the extent that they supposedly "played the porn card." Though that turned out to be just an employee making a joke.

It seems it's a bit like Obama.

People certainly have great expectations for it. They say it's going to kill the Kindle. The accessory market is gonna explode. Google had better watch out. It'll jump-start the job market. And it's even going to change the way kids grow up. Really. it's just that cool. I hear it'll also give you a blowjob if you buy the app.

But seriously people, where are our priorities?

With all of this controversy flying around, I'm reminded of just one thing.

Yes, I've returned. It's been a while, I know. I don't really have an excuse either. I suppose everyone falls into a rut somewhere... or something like that. Anyway I'm going to start off again with these web clips to get myself back on track, and then we'll see if I can't puke up anything that resembles an article or two.

This mod sticks the old Half-life 2 on the new, updated source engine (used in The Orange Box). It's a little hard to nab (copyright and all. try) but totally worth it. It also adds some achievements to grind for.

It kinda scares me how Facebook doesn't want you to delete your profile, to the extent that they're willing to fight for it. I mean FFS Facebook, I thought it was MY profile.

GameRanger is a seriously awesome game management and online client (think Gamespy replacement) that you can use to easily play multiplayer on games where it isn't supported very well (the recent Borderlands comes to mind).

I've recently moved a bunch of different machines to Windows 7, and have found Ninite to be super-awesome.  I'll probably rant about it later.

Good article on humor in games, why it's often not funny, and how it might be.

Speaking of humor, here's an Open Letter to the Parents in Starbucks. Pretty funny stuff.

Well, I thought I wouldn't do web clips anymore, but there's just so many clippy things and snippets I need to share. I suppose I wont make it a daily thing, but weekly or so shouldn't be too intrusive.

I'll be moving back into college so the next couple of days could get busy. Just fyi.

People can be politically silly on craigslist.

This is flying around, it's pretty awesome:

I added social media links to posts on our feed. Should I add them to the site posts as well? They would look similarly unobtrusive. Would people use them? Let me know in the comments, thanks.

Do you suck at TF2? Get a tutor for free at the TF2 mentor project.

A recent Wikipedia survey found that, of the people who edit Wikipedia, only 13% are women. Though troublesome, I'd attribute a lot of it to the geekiness of editing Wikipedia. The survey also found that of Wikipedia readers, 69% are men and 31% are women, which probably also has a lot to do with it.

I'm back, with some Synthosaurus

I'm ending my little break from the blogging, and plan on returning to a schedule of some sort (coincidentally, the next couple of days might be busy for me.... but other than that....). This is "Teens in Love, in Space" by The Synthosaurus, aka Brendan McGuigan, who does a lot of different synth-dance/awesome stuff. He's on MeFiMusic, if you'd like to keep up with his work. I'm not sure if I want to continue doing my daily web clips. They're maybe too easy, and seem to be polluting the site. They give me the opportunity to say, "Hey Me, do you maybe want to do a substantive post today?" "Well, I already did web clips, I think that'll be fine." Maybe I'll make it a weekly thing and figure out something else to do daily, though I'm willing to keep them daily if people like them. Let me know what you think. Anyway, I come back with more experience and some new ideas for posts, that I'll be getting out there soon.

Just saw District 9, pretty awesome, totally unpredictable. The whole apartheid thing was majorly apparent, though. that's not a bad thing.

I've run into some free time, so expect a more frequent stream form me, I hope.

Twitscoop is twitter on steroids, with very beefy live-search features and such. What's interesting is the information you can get by just checking the tag cloud every so often. I used it as a clock today, as the time will grow in popularity every hour.

Some of Niel Blomkamps (director of District 9) other stuff.

Head-fi-ers talking about how they lost their ear virginity.

Speaking of food, this looks delicious.

So the once great IM app Digsby has pulled a 180 and is now a total POS. Appalling really. It's time to uninstall.

Audiosurf and some other game reviews coming from me soon. Oh and part 2 of the l4d reviews.

Will Wheaton is writing a short story, inspired by Left 4 Dead.

This still amazes me. A photo every day.

Opera Unite is sort of like a personal server/ sharing site crossover thingy that you can use with opera. It seems cool (though a tad vague), but I'm pretty sure it's not going to pick up like they say.

It probably won't do anything but give Redmond a headache, but tiny content management company i4i won a lawsuit against Microsoft, with the ruling banning Microsoft from selling Word in the U.S.

This guy made some live action retro game pictures.

Happy 10th birthday, System Shock 2.

Well, PayPayl is being a dick.

And, LEGO is being a dick too.

Why we quit playing games, besides, you know, RL. Seriously his first example is the exact reason I haven't played Fallout 3 in months. I made a bad decision and realized that the game hadn't autosaved. It brought me back a good two hours worth of play. Replaying those two hours still doesn't seem appealing.

A friend just finished the show (and loved it of course) and I was reminded of why the wire is (or was) the best show on television.

This media player is apparently very good. I personally haven't had enough time to play around with it yet, though. I'll review it when the time comes.

So, the Add-Ons manager is out, build some shit.

15 Twitter desktop clients.

Anil Dash talking about Apple's secrecy being harmful to them. I dunno though, to quote bill gate on Google (and this quote has been going around, "The more vague they are, the more interesting it is."

Did you buy it yet? Because there's not much time left.

Cut things in this fun physics puzzler.

This is way too fun. The rings don't go that far, but you can eat them (btw what's with all of the consumerism?).

Stick it to the apple.

Notice our Twitter link? Isn't it twit-tastic?

uTorrent finally learns to play nice. I would wait for the stable release though, or at least for a stable beta to show up on filehippo. I tried it out and there were too many crashes for a program that needs to be on 24/7. No doubt they'll all be fixed by the time it's ready, but until then I'm gonna stick with 1.8.3.

Oh America, sometimes, you make me sigh. Blackberry twitter clients. Speaking of which, you can now follow us on twitter! We're so cool and hip with the times yo! I'll add a link shortly. I'm not sure what will go there except just post updates, and a way to easily get in touch with us. I'll figure it out I suppose. Collaborate with stubborn people. Pretty old, but interesting stuff on dialog.

What does a computer think of death? How to read a research paper. A good transitional add-on for those of you who aren't yet ready for RSS. Though it's good by itself. Also, please use RSS. Speaking of which, our RSS feed now uses Pubsubhubbub, meaning real-time, instant updates, which is pretty awesome. I've also added a "Subscribe by email" link, that pretty much does what it says, allowing you to receive updates via email. Last year on The Tartar Sauce: A gamepad review. Everything you need to know to start your linux journey.

Northern lights from space.

Very slick music bit-torrent site. A bit of a small catalog, but what's there is very well done. Worth a look.

pun.

One of my favorite words, that I should use more often.

Please feel better about wasting time here.

Bang on some techno drums.

How people spend their day.

Piracy is serious business, and puts people in jail.

Debating putting this code on The Tartar Sauce. Looks like it would only affect around 1% of our users.

Printable DVD covers for your GOG.com games.

So far I'm going to review these campaigns for L4D:
Back to School
Death Aboard
Dam It!
Night Terror
Yea, they're all fairly popular to start off with, but I think I'm going to make it a series and eventually move on to some more obscure ones I've been playing around with.

Firefox, now with 100% more billion!

The awesome leave me alone box.

Happy August all.

Extremely detailed thread on Netbook playability for GOG.com games.

The best gaming CPU's for the money, for July. Some interesting developments in the low range, with intel and the i7 unsurprisingly taking the high range.

A ridiculously simple, and blazing fast desktop search tool.

A ton of L4D2 footage.

Text messages are a massive rip-off.

The Autofocus system, for those who want to GTD without GTD.

A bookmarklet that feigns IE6, and breaks websites.

From here, the only funny part:
"You step blinking into the blinding white light. All is new and the opportunities are endless. The vast wilderness of the Internet lies stretched before you, beckoning you, enticing you with its untold possibilities. All that remains is a name, a handle, the very essence of definition for the blank slate that IS...you. It can not be overstated, the significance of this ac...oh, you've picked CockasarusRex...well, that's good too."

Left 4 Dead 2 box art story.

Hack people way too easily (though not remotely) with a U3 flash drive.

Yes, things are coming, namely a review of some sweet L4D community maps. Of course, I've got to play the shit out of them all first.

Ok, so it seems like it was all a bit of a mix-up, involving DDoS. AT&T says they blocked 4chan in order to protect end users from the DDoS, but why? No one's blocking we-got-viruses.com or ultra-flash-download-sucks-bandwidth.net. Plus doing it without notifying 4chan is a dick move whatever the reason. I'm still thinking there's something else behind this. Either way there was some neat planning over at Encyclopedia Dramatica.

An interesting and inventive MJ tribute.

A swingin' mario song.

This is extremely good, and I recommend you pick it up.

Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer footage. Custom kill streaks!

Bill Maher talking about stuff that matters. I try to stay away from politics as much as I can, but this issue just pisses me off. AT&T IS BLOCKING 4CHAN! I don't care if it's the most disgusting and offensive place on the planet, as a member of an uncensored internet I should have the right to look at whatever the fuck I want. I'm not a user of /b/ and the like, but I hope there's a huge retaliation from 4chan for this one. This is bullshit. You've heard about the silent protest, but what about the invisible one? Your facial hair, people will judge it.
